Firm or soft pregnancy pillow: which one holds through the night

Aim for medium firmness. The test: press your palm into the middle of one arm. It should sink about an inch and a half (3-4 cm), then push back. If it flattens down to the fabric, the pillow will be crushed within a week; if it barely moves, it will create a hard spot under your hip.

Soft sells well and disappoints fast. It is the badly chosen parameter, because people judge a pillow by pressing it for two seconds in a shop or from a photo — never after fifty nights — which is the only moment that counts.

What a pillow that is too soft does

The bump is heavy. An under-filled arm compresses under that weight and, within a few nights, is reduced to two thicknesses of fabric at exactly the point where you need it. You are still sleeping “with a pillow”, but it holds nothing: the pelvis drops back down, and you wake up the way you did before you bought it.

The symptom is recognisable: the pillow seems perfect the first week, then feels worse without you being able to say why. That is not an impression — it is filling that has settled.

What a pillow that is too firm does

The opposite exists too. An arm that is too dense will not mould: instead of following the curve between the ribs and the hip, it creates a single pressure point. You feel it mostly under the lower hip, and it shows up as more frequent changes of side — so more wakings, which is exactly what you were trying to avoid.

The right level, and how to check it

Do the test in the middle of an arm, not on the closed curve: the curve is always denser because the filling gathers there. Do it again after a week of use. A decent pillow will have softened slightly without losing its volume.

Firmness depends on the filling

The two are linked. Polyester fibre gives a stable medium firmness and puffs back up with a shake. Microbeads start very soft and settle markedly: they end up firmer than they began, but with less volume. Kapok is firm from the start and stays that way. The detail is in our guide on filling.

Reviving a pillow that has flattened

Before concluding it is dead, try this: take the cover off, hold the pillow by both arms and shake it firmly several times, then work the settled areas with your whole hands. The filling redistributes and some of the volume comes back. Repeated once a week, this noticeably extends how long it holds.

Some models have a zip that lets you add filling. It is a real advantage where it exists: a few handfuls of fibre are enough to bring back the original support.

What buyers report

Of the 129 written reviews we went through, 26 talk about the fabric and the finish and 22 about size and volume — material and hold come just behind sleeping comfort, which dominates with 43 mentions. Put another way: firmness is not argued over at the point of buying, it is discovered in use. Which is why being able to send back a model that does not suit matters.

Our U-shaped pregnancy pillow is fibre-filled, medium firmness, with a removable machine-washable cover. You have 30 days to run the test at home, over several nights — which is how firmness is judged.
