Wedge pillows in pregnancy: what they do

A wedge is a foam ramp. It props one area — the bump, the back, sometimes the upper body — at a fixed angle, and it takes almost no room in the bed. That second part is its real advantage, and it is the reason people choose one over a full-body pillow. Our own compact option is a different shape — two lobes joined by a strap — so what follows is what a ramp does, and where ours works differently.

This one deserves a straight answer because the category is confusing: a lot of things get called a wedge that are not one. Here is what a genuine wedge changes, what decides whether it keeps working, and where our own compact option differs from it.

What a wedge actually changes

It changes one angle. Slid under the bump while you lie on your side, it fills the gap between the belly and the mattress so the bump is not hanging unsupported. Slid behind your back, it stops you rolling flat. Placed under the chest and shoulders, it raises the upper body.

What it does not do is hold you anywhere. A wedge is a passive ramp: roll off it and it is doing nothing until you put yourself back. That is the limit of the shape, and it is the difference people notice at three in the morning.

On whether a raised or propped position suits you, ask your midwife rather than a product page. That question is about you, not about foam.

The two things that decide a good one

Firmness and the angle. Everything else on a wedge is packaging.
What to checkWhy it decides
It does not compress under the bump A wedge carries weight at a fixed incline. Foam that sinks flattens the very angle you bought
A shallow ramp rather than a steep one You have to stay on it all night. Steep angles are easy to slide off without noticing
A cover that comes off Same as any pillow used nightly — it decides how long the thing lasts

Note what is missing from that list: brand, price, number of layers. A wedge is a block of foam cut at an angle, and the mechanics do not improve with the label.

Wedge or full-body pillow

These are not competing versions of one product. A wedge props one area and takes almost no room. A U-shaped pillow holds your back, bump and knees at once and takes a good deal of room — our guide on how much space it needs gives the measurements.

So the real question is usually bed space rather than shape. If space is what rules it out, the section below is the one that matters.

What we sell instead

A compact side pillow: two lobes joined by a strap, one sliding under the bump and one behind the back. It holds you on your side from both directions at once — which a ramp, being one-sided, cannot do — and it still takes a fraction of a U’s room.

It is a side pillow, and that is what we call it. It is the option for a bed where a 130-centimetre U will not fit, or for a partner who would rather keep their half. It is offered as an add-on with the pillow, at $49.95.

If room is not the constraint, the U remains the more complete answer — it is the one that also becomes a feeding support later. Our guide on whether it is worth it weighs that.

Common questions

Are wedge pillows safe to use in pregnancy?

A wedge is a foam ramp — mechanically it raises one part of you relative to another, and nothing about it restrains you or holds a position you have not chosen. Whether a raised position suits you is a question about you rather than about the object, and your midwife is the person to ask. What we can tell you is what the shape does: it changes an angle, and it stops doing anything the moment you roll off it.

What is the best wedge pillow for pregnancy?

Judge it on firmness and on the angle, not on the name. A wedge carries weight at a fixed incline; foam that compresses under a bump flattens the angle you bought it for, which is the usual disappointment. As for the angle itself, a shallow ramp is easier to stay on all night than a steep one.

What do you sell instead of a wedge?

A U-shaped pregnancy pillow, and as a compact alternative a two-lobe side pillow joined by a strap: it slides under the bump and behind the back to hold you on your side. That is a different shape from a ramp and it does a different job, so we name each one for what it is.

Wedge or full-body pillow?

They solve different problems. A wedge props one area at an angle and takes almost no room in the bed. A full-body pillow holds your back, bump and knees at the same time, and takes a good deal of room. If bed space is the constraint, that is the real question — not the shape.
