Pelvic support belts in pregnancy

A pelvic belt and a bump support belt are two different objects worn in two different places. The pelvic one is narrower, sits low around the hip bones, and is normally recommended and fitted by a midwife or physiotherapist as part of their own advice. The bump one sits under the belly and carries its weight while you are on your feet. This page explains which is which — the decision about pelvic support belongs to the person examining you.

These two get confused constantly in search results, and buying the wrong one is a common and avoidable waste. Here is where each sits, what each is for, and where this page stops.

They look similar in a photograph, which is most of the problem. The reliable signal is width and placement: if it is narrow and meant to sit below the bump rather than under it, you are looking at a pelvic belt.

Why the fitting matters more than the belt

With a pelvic belt, position and tension are the whole thing, and both are individual. That is why they are normally fitted by someone who can see you: a few centimetres of placement changes what the belt is doing entirely.

This is also why a page like ours cannot usefully tell you how to wear one. We can tell you how to place a bump support belt, because that placement is the same for everyone — low, under the bump, on the hip bones. Pelvic support is not in that category.

What a bump support belt is for

The everyday tool for the hours you spend standing: it carries part of the bump’s weight through your hips, instead of leaving it pulling forward. It works against gravity, which is why it does something upright and nothing lying down.

That is what our support belt is: four sizes, firm tension, worn under your clothes for the stretches of the day when you are moving. Our guides cover what it does mechanically and how to position it.

For the nights, the equivalent tool is a U-shaped pregnancy pillow — different problem, different object.

Who should be answering this

If you are searching for pelvic support, something is prompting the search, and that something deserves an examination rather than a product page. Talk to your midwife, your doctor or a women’s health physiotherapist. They can look at what is actually happening and tell you whether pelvic support is the right answer, which belt, and where it should sit.

We sell a bump support belt and a pregnancy pillow. Neither of them is a substitute for that conversation.

Common questions

What is a pelvic support belt?

A narrow belt worn low, around the bony part of the pelvis rather than under the bump. It is positioned differently and worn tighter than a bump support belt, and it is usually recommended and fitted by a midwife or a physiotherapist as part of their own advice.

How is it different from a maternity support belt?

Placement and purpose. A maternity support belt sits under the bump and carries part of its weight while you are on your feet. A pelvic belt sits lower, around the hip bones themselves, and is narrower. They are not interchangeable, and one is not an upgrade of the other.

Which one should I get?

If the tiring part of your day is the hours spent standing with the weight of the bump pulling forward, a bump support belt is the everyday tool for that. If you have been advised to use pelvic support specifically, follow that advice and the fitting that came with it — a website cannot make that call for you.
